“Are you the fish?”
“No. I’m the chicken.”
Good, eh? People have suggested various contexts for this, the most obvious being in a restaurant where the waiter comes to the table carrying a tray of dinners and wants to know who to despatch them to. Other suggestions have been characters at a fancy dress party or spies using code-words! Someone suggested kids drawing lots for creatures they have to find on a trip to the museum. (A primary school teacher!) I’m sure you came up with your own.
I’d like you now to consider this utterance: “I am hungry.” Three words which are easy to understand by anyone who understands English. But, what do they really mean? How many different situations can you find for this? Remember to ask yourself; who said it, who to, and why? Until next time, happy thinking.
